Magdalena Stopa writes about a forgotten hero Of all Polish pre-war politicians, Julian Kulski is a name that hardly ever gets a mention. This changed with the renowned Warsaw historian Magdalena Stopa, who wrote a biography of one of the most distinguished Polish civic leaders.
Magdalena Stopa, the author of the book, is an art historian and journalist, who has always held Warsaw dear. She has received a number of accolades, including the Klio Award and certificates of merit from the Warsaw Friends Association. (Her works include Rzemieślnicy warszawscy, Chleb po warszawsku and Przed wojną i pałacem)
It was Stopa who, working closely with the Kulski family, undertook to commemorate Julian Kulski, who took over from Stefan Starzyński as Mayor of Warsaw in the autumn of 1939.
“The author presented us with a vivid story about the evolving Warsaw and evolving Poland, beginning in the late 19th century and ending in the second half of the 1970s,” wrote Rafał Brodacki, a historian, in a review for Histmag.org
The book officially debuted on 22 June 2017 at the Central Agricultural Library Column Hall in Warsaw. The launch event was hosted by the journalist Michał Karnowski, with Warsaw Mayor’s son Julian Eugeniusz Kulski and daughter Wanda Trandowa as special guests.
The fact that Mayor Kulski’s son was perfectly familiar with the political situation at the time, having fought in the Warsaw Uprising as a member of the resistance and Home Army soldier, made the story all the more interesting, said participants of the launch event.
